Two Soccer Fans met when German State Secretary in the Foreign Office, Georg Boomgaarden, met with Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Karen Hughes, in the State Department on December 7, 2005. Karen Hughes gladly accepted the official World Championship Soccer ball and expressed her desire to follow the games Germany is hosting in 2006. Certainly this was only one of the issues discussed.
“Germany is ready, it will be a big soccer party”, Boomgaarden said on the eve of the final draw in Leipzig on Friday, December 9. The World Cup starts June 9, 2006 in Munich. The final will be played on July 9, 2006 in Berlin. The American soccer team is stationed in Hamburg during the games. “I hope we meet the Americans in the final round”, Boomgaarden said smilingly.
The State Secretary in the Foreign Office is meeting with high ranking officials in the State Department, Department of the Treasury, International Monetary Fund and World Bank and others during a three-day Washington visit from December 7 – 9.
Boomgaarden gave a speech, “Europe and Latin America on the Way to a Strategic Partnership?” at the School of Advanced International Studies. He is scheduled to meet with Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick on Thursday and with Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Robert Kimmitt on Friday. He was also to meet with Earl Anthony Wayne, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and with International Monetary Fund Deputy Managing Director Anne Krueger on Thursday, with further meetings at the IMF and the World Bank to follow on Friday.
