Fischer: "End the Terror in the Middle East!"

Fischer called on Israelis and Palistinians to support US mediation efforts.

In a statement released on Sunday (December 2), German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Israel. He demanded that President Arafat arrest those responsible and called on both parties in the conflict to support the US mediation effort. In a recent interview with the newspaper Die Welt, Fischer had emphasized that the European role in helping to end the conflict in the Middle East was more and more that of an ?honest broker.? The EU?s relations with Israel and the relations of individual EU member states with Israel have improved greatly in the past several months, especially after Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, became part of the Mitchell Group working toward the implementation of a plan for peace. The EU?s participation in the group has helped to ensure that the United States, Europe, Russia and the United Nations now hold the same position on Middle East issues. Fischer emphasized that Germany and the EU complement the US role economically and politically.

?I perceive it as an enormous success of German postwar history ? after all that happened ? that today we can say that we are Israel?s most important and reliable partner after the United States,? Fischer said. ?And that has not at all limited our relationship to the Arab-Palestinian side. On the contrary. The wiser Palestinians understand that we can be valuable to the legitimate interests of the Palestinian side only on the basis of our clear position on Israel. That is what we want to do within the framework of the European efforts, and that is a lot.?
