Fischer Welcomes Afghan Election Results
Following the announcement of the official results of the Afghan presidential elections, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer stated on November 3: "With the first free election of a head of state, the Afghan people have taken a critically important step on the path toward stability and democracy in their country. Independent experts have characterized the elections as fair — despite some shortcomings. The Afghan people have clearly shown through their exceptionally high voter turnout, including 40-percent women, that they stand behind the political reconstruction process initiated at Petersberg — despite repeated attempts in the run-up to sabotage the elections through threats and attacks. This and the fact that the elections were able to take place in spite of difficult circumstances nationwide, deserves enormous recognition and respect. I congratulate election winner Hamid Karzai and the Afghan people on this impressive success. The positive momentum of these elections offers a good starting basis for the upcoming preparation of parliamentary elections. The German Government will also continue to stand closely by Afghanistan as it takes further steps on the path toward becoming a stabile, secure, free, and democratic state." November 3, 2004 Link
