Concerns About Serious Flaws in Ukrainian Election
On Tuesday (23 November), while attending the international conference on Iraq in Sharm el-Sheikh, Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer issued the following statement on the run-off vote in the Ukrainian presidential election: "There is reason to doubt the official results of the run-off vote in the presidential election. The preliminary report of the OSCE observation mission, too, has concluded that basic standards of free and fair elections were once again violated in the course of Sunday's run-off vote. The election results must reflect the political will of the Ukrainian people. We call upon the Ukrainian government to join with the OSCE in re-examining both the election and the vote-counting procedure, and to make the necessary corrections. At the same time, we call upon all sides in Ukraine to refrain from resorting to violence in this political dispute. The Federal Government and its partners are following the developments with keen interest." November 24, 2004
