Former Jerusalem Mayor Kollek Remembered for his Courage, Influence
Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier both remembered the former long-serving mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek, for his remarkable life of courage, advocacy for the peaceful coexistence of the people of Jerusalem, and positive influence on German-Israeli relations. Teddy Kollek made a contribution to the coexistence of Jews and Arabs that was respected worldwide, Chancellor Merkel wrote in a message of condolence to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on January 2. Even after his long tenure as mayor, Teddy Kollek continued work for good political and social development of the region with his Jerusalem Foundation, she said. His impact reached far beyond the borders of Jerusalem or his tenure in office.
Foreign Minister Steinmeier also recalled Kollek's life of service and advocacy in a message of condolence to widow: "Teddy Kollek embodies both the painful experiences of Jewish people in Europe and the early development of the State of Israel. The German people will remember him with respect, above all as the long-serving mayor of a modern, tolerant Jerusalem and the founder of the Jerusalem Foundation. With the passing of Teddy Kollek, we are losing a passionate advocate of justice, whose courage, moral inspiration and unfailing commitment to peaceful dialogue and the coexistence of Jews, Muslims and Christians in Jerusalem will never be forgotten. His name is closely associated with the history of German-Israeli relations. The Konrad Adenauer Conference Centre which he initiated in Jerusalem bears testimony to this. We will miss his voice. It is thus all the more important that we preserve his legacy." January 3, 2007 BPA photos
