Germany Increases Quake Aid for Pakistan to $24.85 million
In view of the dire situation following the major earthquake in northern Pakistan and in the border region between India and Pakistan, the Federal Government is continuing to increase its relief efforts for the victims of the catastrophe: The Federal Government has to date made available more than $24.85 million (20.6 million euro).
- Humanitarian assistance
Some 5.9 million euro has come from the Federal Foreign Office budget for humanitarian aid. Of this, some 3.25 million euro has been given to the United Nations, which will use it primarily to provide shelter and healthcare.
- Reconstruction
- The European Union (EU) has so far made 13.6 million euro available for emergency medical care, emergency shelters, foodstuffs and household items. Approximately 20% of these funds come from Germany. The Federal Government also supports the Commission's aim of substantially increasing EU assistance. - The Federal Government is furthermore playing an active role within NATO and will make available further air transport capacities. Four transport helicopters will deploy to Pakistan in the next few days, and two Transall aeroplanes have been put at NATO's disposal for the collection and airlifting of relief supplies.
