Schröer: No German Troops in Iraq
German Chancellor Gerhard Schröer ruled out the possibility of deploying German Armed Forces in Iraq. Germany?s position on this issue won?t change; the German Government won?t send soldiers into Iraq, Schröer said on the evening of October 13 following a meeting in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Schröer specifically stated: ?No one in the German Government, including the German defense minister, is considering changing the position on Iraq.? Government Spokesman Thomas Steg had already said earlier in Berlin: ?There will be no German soldiers in Iraq.? Steg went on to say, Schröer made clear in a Cabinet meeting that this position remains valid: ?It is valid today, and it will remain valid in the future.? October 13, 2004
