Foreign Minister Fischer on the Agreement Reached December 8 by the Ukrainian Parliament

Ukraine

Speaking in Berlin on 8 December, Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer issued the following statement on the consensus reached in the Ukrainian Parliament:

"As a result of the political compromise achieved today by the Ukrainian Parliament, the impending escalation of the critical situation in Ukraine has been averted, paving the way for a solution to the crisis. All indications suggest that a re-run of the elections can take place on 26 December, as decreed by the Supreme Court. Now it is vital that free and fair elections which truly reflect the will of the Ukrainian electorate be conducted under international observation and in accordance with democratic principles. Germany will demonstrate its support by sending up to 100 election observers as part of the OSCE mission.

This solution is largely thanks to the international mediators – the High Representative of the European Union, Javier Solana, the Polish and Lithuanian Presidents, Aleksander Kwasniewski and Valdas Adamkus, OSCE Secretary General Jan Kubis and Russian Duma Chairman Boris Gryzlov. However, great respect is also due to the Ukrainian people, who have demonstrated community spirit and a great sense of responsibility during many weeks of peaceful protests."
