Federal Foreign Minister Fischer congratulates the new President of Ukraine on his inauguration

January 23, 2005

Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer made the following statement in Berlin on 23 January following the swearing in of Viktor Yushchenko as the new Ukrainian President:

"The Federal Government congratulates Viktor Yushchenko on his inauguration as the new President of Ukraine.

The peaceful change of guard in Ukraine has contributed greatly to stability and democracy in the region as a whole. With their peaceful and courageous protests, the Ukrainian people have demonstrated a tremendous sense of civic responsibility and maturity.

Now economic and political reform must be tackled anew at a time when all sides are required to pull together after a particularly divisive election.

The Federal Government will firmly support Ukraine as it continues on its path of reform."
