Condolence letter from Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer on the death of General Vernon Walters, former US Ambassador to Germany

Translation

The Federal Minister for Berlin,                      Feb. 14, 2002
Foreign Affairs

The Honorable
Colin Powell
Secretary of State
U.S. Department of State
Washington, DC

Dear Colin:

I was deeply saddened to receive the news that General Vernon Walters died last Sunday. On behalf of the German Government, I wish to convey my sincere condolences to you and the United States Government.

General Walters's work as ambassador to Germany during the period of the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification have not been forgotten. We remember him as a friend and outstanding expert on Germany and the German question who distinguished himself particularly through his uncanny political instinct and vision. Germany will never forget his contribution to German reunification.

Joschka Fischer
