Minister of State Kerstin Müller on the situation in Togo

Minister of State Kerstin Müller made the following statement on the situation in Togo:

"The German Government welcomes the determined efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union to restore constitutional order in Togo also by means of sanctions.

By resigning as President of Togo on 25 February 2005, Faure Gnassingbé took a first important step on the road to re-establishing constitutional order in Togo.

Now the way must be cleared for national dialogue between all Togo's political powers. This includes the introduction of electoral law providing for free, transparent and democratic elections, both presidential and parliamentary.

The current Government and the Parliament which supports it have not been legitimized by democratic elections. Therefore an interim government representing all the political powers in the country should conduct government business until such elections are held. This is the only way to ensure all political players can be involved in the ongoing democratization process in the interest of the Togolese people, in building stability and security in Togo and in shouldering responsibility.

Following the death of his father Gnassingbé Eyadema, Faure Gnassingbé was declared President by the military in violation of the Constitution on 5 February.
