Joint German-French declaration on Lebanon Germany and France reaffirm their support for an independent, sovereign, and democratic Lebanon. We note the announcement made by the Syrian President that he will implement UN Resolution 1559. We expect Syria to withdraw its troops and intelligence services from Lebanon completely and to do so as quickly as possible. We will remain engaged, as is the entire international community, and will closely watch the further steps taken. We will carefully monitor the trips being taken by the UN Secretary-General's special envoy to Beirut and Damascus. We expect both the Lebanese and the Syrian governments to provide full and comprehensive cooperation to the investigative team that has been charged by the United Nations with the task of finding out who was behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. We take the view that it is only under these conditions that free, fair, and independent elections will be possible in Lebanon. March 7, 2005 |
