Federal Minister Steinmeier on the IAEA Governors' deliberations on the Iranian nuclear programme, 8 March 2006
In the past days and weeks in particular, we — the E3 and others, above all our Russian partners — have tried very hard in numerous talks to convince the Iranian Government to meet the concerns of the international community and the demands of the Board of Governors (of the IAEA). Sadly our efforts have not yet been successful. The Board of Governors therefore remains of the opinion that the time has come for the United Nations Security Council to be seized of this matter. It must however be clearly stated that involving the Security Council in our efforts does not mark the end of diplomacy. On the contrary, the aim is to lend the resolutions and endeavours of the IAEA the additional weight of the Security Council. We are and remain committed to a diplomatic solution.
