Germany Welcomes Release of Afghan Man

The German Government welcomes the release of Abdul Rahman, who had faced trial in Kabul on charges of converting to Christianity, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on March 28 in Berlin.

“I am relieved by this decision and I express my appreciation and thanks to all those involved who intervened for Abdul Rahman,” Steinmeier said. “The Afghan Government has demonstrated courage in a difficult situation and shown that it stands for a new Afghanistan.”

Together with its Afghan partners, Germany will continue to work with commitment for the permanent anchoring of  democracy and the rule of law in Afghanistan, Steinmeier said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed great relief that Abdul Rahman no longer faces the death penalty. The Chancellor thanked everyone in the German Bundestag who supported the Federal Government’s efforts to achieve Rahman’s release.

The Federal Government will continue to make every effort to ensure that religious freedom prevails and human rights are put into practice for the people of Afghanistan.
