Approval of Iraqi Government Welcomed

German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder sent the following telegram April 28 congratulating Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari on his confirmation and inviting him to Berlin:

“Allow me to convey my warm congratulations on your appointment as Prime Minister of the transitional government of the Republic of Iraq.  I wish you all the best of luck and every conceivable success in your challenging task of improving the security situation in your country, building a democratic government system, and advancing the reconstruction of Iraq.

The German Government is resolved to continue supporting you on this path and offers you its trusted cooperation.  I am confident that our two countries will be able to continue expanding their close and friendly relations and would therefore be pleased to be able to welcome you as my guest in Berlin.”

Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer issued the following statement:

“Today’s confirmation of Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and his cabinet by the transitional National Assembly represents an important step on the road to Iraq becoming a democratic community.

It is especially significant that representatives of the country’s various political and ethnic groups are participating in the government.

With today’s formation of the government, a new phase in the political process begins.  All the various forces of the country’s society must be included in the task at hand now of drafting a constitution.  The German Government will continue to do all it can to support the new Iraqi government in building a democratic state.”
