Germany Welcomes US Commitment and Resolve in Middle East Peace Process
The German Government welcomes US President George Bush’s recent statements on his commitment and resolve to remain engaged in the Middle East peace process, State Secretary Ulrich Wilhelm, government spokesperson, said on July 17. His full statement is in the following excerpt from the regular Government Press Conference.
State Secretary Wilhelm: Ladies and Gentlemen, you know that U.S. President George Bush delivered a speech yesterday in which he announced an initiative on the Middle East peace process. I would like briefly to present to you the Federal Government’s position on that initiative:
By convening an international meeting, the United States is underscoring its resolve to remain engaged in the Middle East peace process. The Federal Government expressly welcomes this U.S. commitment and resolve. We are pleased that the meeting is aimed at laying the foundation for a successful Palestinian state, with which peace negotiations can be conducted. A two-state solution includes a viable Palestinian state, along with the establishment of an effective government, a sound financial system, the rule of law, and a sustainable economy. Tony Blair, who has been charged with this very mandate by the Quartet, can also make an important contribution to this effort. Central to this goal are the bilateral negotiations between Palestinian President Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, who must be supported by the Quartet. The entire international community remains called upon to support the process. The Arab nations also have a very crucial role to play.
I would furthermore like to announce that Federal Chancellor Merkel will call the new Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, for the first time this afternoon and offer him also the Federal Government’s support for all further steps that the Palestinian Government takes to move the peace process forward.
