Federal Minister Steinmeier on recent developments in the Middle East July 30, 2006 Following the events in Lebanon on July 30, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued this statement: "I was horrified to hear reports of numerous civilian losses resulting from today's Israeli attack on Qana. We are all shocked and saddened at the terrible suffering involved, particularly on the part of the innocent women and children. In my talks with the Israeli side I have repeatedly pointed out that, even given the right to self-defence, any use of military force must be appropriate, and that in particular civilian losses must be avoided at all costs. The tragic events in Qana have shown once again that a cease-fire at the earliest possible opportunity must now be our highest priority. I am firmly convinced that this conflict can only be resolved as part of a political solution. Therefore I all the more strongly urge the conflict parties not to now block the route to a political agreement on the end of hostilities. Both sides must give the international community's diplomatic efforts a chance."
