German Government Pleased With Israeli Withdrawal
Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer issued the following statement today (August 19) on the course so far of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip: "The German Government is pleased with the course so far of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli decision to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and from four settlements in the West Bank was an historic step and a sign of great courage. Despite attempts to disrupt the withdrawal and the cowardly murders of four Palestinians in Ramallah/Shiloh, both sides have so far achieved an overwhelmingly peaceful evacuation from the settlements in the Gaza Strip. This success deserves great recognition. The German Government appeals to both sides to continue on the adopted course of vision and reason. It offers the chance to find constructive solutions to still open issues and to take further steps within the framework of the road map toward the peaceful coexistence of Israelis and Palestinians."
