Fischer: Seize the Opportunities for Peace

Foreign Minster Fischer

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer issued the following statement on August 23 on the completion of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and from four settlements in the West Bank:

“The German Government welcomes the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and from four settlements in the West Bank. This was a courageous decision and an historic step. The evacuation of a total of 25 settlements was achieved in just two weeks and thus much more quickly than initially planned. Both sides have conducted themselves in a professional and disciplined manner and showed the necessary restraint.

Further steps must now quickly follow. In particular, security and a discernible improvement in the economic situation in the Gaza Strip and West Bank are crucial. The mission of the Quartet Special Representative for the Gaza Withdrawal, James Wolfensohn, who has our full support, will play a pivotal role in this context.

On the Palestinian side, advancements in internal reforms and strict compliance with the cease-fire are crucial At the same time, Israel can contribute decisively to economic development in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and thereby promote stability and security.

The two sides must now seize the opportunities for the peace process following the evacuation of the settlements. They must continue on the adopted future course and find constructive solutions to the still open issues and for the further steps that need to be taken within the framework of the road map toward a peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. During this critical stage, Germany will support all steps that lead to the implementation of commitments set forth in the road map and to a lasting peaceful solution.”
