Message of Greetings from Ambassador Klaus Scharioth on the Occasion of the 2006 German-American Day It is my great pleasure to convey my warmest greetings to you, the German-Americans and many friends of Germany in this country, on the 2006 German-American Day. Having assumed my duties as ambassador in March, I look forward to a fruitful cooperation with the German-American community during my tenure in Washington. Today, America is observing German-American Day for the 20th time. In his proclamation in 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared October 6 German-American Day for the first time, hereby paying tribute to the immense contribution Americans of German ancestry have made to the life, culture and economy of the United States.. America will commemorate its 400th anniversary in 2007, when the first settlement was established along the banks of the James River. The first Germans who arrived in Jamestown in 1608 were among the earliest settlers. During the year, we will also look back on 400 years of transatlantic relations, mutual enrichment, and shared experiences across the Atlantic. Truly a time to celebrate! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those German-Americans who work so hard to preserve our German heritage, culture, and language in the United States. This involvement is a valuable part of the German-American relations and helps foster understanding between Germans and Americans. Apart from professional organizations and schools, it is you, the members of the German-American societies, who help run language courses, organize the ever popular essay competitions, and encourage German-language students by awarding prizes and scholarships for stays in Germany. I deeply appreciate this commitment; it testifies how much you are aware of and take pride in your German ancestry. I would like to encourage you to continue this important task. It remains remains our common goal to further strengthen the friendship between the German and the American peoples. Best wishes for an exciting and enjoyable German-American Day! October 6, 2006 Klaus Scharioth
