Foreign Minister Fischer Welcomes UN Security Council Decision on Kosovo Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer issued the following statement today (Oct. 25) on the UN Security Council decision to commence talks on the future status of Kosovo: "The German Government welcomes the UN Security Council decision to begin negotiations on the final status of Kosovo and assumes that the negotiations will begin before the end of this year. Six years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, it is time to begin resolving the status question and to keep up the political momentum that has developed over the past months. The parties in Pristina and Belgrade, as well as the neighboring states, need clarity over the further course and future status of Kosovo. The duration and outcome of the status talks are open. All the concerned parties are called upon to participate in the status process in a constructive manner. The international community will not accept unilateral steps and is calling for compromises — on all sides. Every solution regarding the status of Kosovo must also contribute to strengthening stability in the entire region. Together with its partners in the Contact Group and the EU, the German Government will do all it can to promote the status talks. Our aim remains the creation of a multiethnic, democratic Kosovo in which all inhabitants can live, irrespective of their ethnicity, in peace and security and in accordance with the principles of Europe."
