Foreign Minister Steinmeier “Deeply Concerned” About Developments in Pakistan
 |
Berlin: Foreign Office |
Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin on November 4 on recent developments in Pakistan:
“I am deeply concerned about the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of the constitution in Pakistan. No one denies the Pakistan Government’s right to defend itself from terrorist attacks and to take steps to ensure stability and security in Pakistan. In the long run, however, these objectives can only be achieved if Pakistan remains committed to democracy and the rule of law.
I hope that the constitutional order will be restored as quickly as possible. We attach great importance to civilian government, respect for the principle of the separation of powers and an independent judiciary, as well as freedom of the press. What is more, it is crucial that the groundwork for free and fair elections be laid speedily.
We are particularly concerned by reports of numerous arrests of leaders of political parties, lawyers and representatives of civil society. I call upon Pakistan’s leaders to release them without delay and to lift the restrictions on freedom of the press.
I appeal to everyone involved to exercise restraint and to work together to find a peaceful and democratic solution. Moreover, special efforts must be made to bring about national reconciliation.
The G8 and Germany, the current holder of the G8 Presidency, are ready to support Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and on its path back to democracy.”
