German Government Condemns Assassination in Beirut
The German Government sharply condemns the assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel in Beirut on November 21.
In expressing her sympathies to Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the attack on Gemayel, calling it a further attempt to hinder Lebanon on its way to national unity and to an independent and sovereign state. She assured the Lebanese leader of her support in his efforts to stabilize the country.
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called the attack another attempt to sabotage Lebanon’s development.
"Those responsible must be dealt with rigorously. I call upon all forces in Lebanon and the wider region to live up to their responsibilities and refrain from any action which could further destabilize the internal situation in Lebanon," Foreign Minister Steinmeier said.
