Peaceful Parliamentary Elections in Iraq Welcomed
Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (Dec. 16) on the parliamentary elections in Iraq: The high voter turnout and the participation of the Sunni population show that the majority of Iraqis have the courage and the determination to drive the democratic process forward and play a part in shaping the future of their country – despite numerous attempts to sabotage the elections in advance with threats and attacks. For this the Iraqi people deserve our utmost respect. The new Parliament and the future Government face considerable challenges. They will have to break down the barriers between the various ethnic and religious groups to lay the foundations for stabilizing the country. Involving all population groups in the democratic process will be crucial if they are to achieve this. In cooperation with its partners the Federal Government will continue to do everything in its power to support the process towards a democratic, peaceful and stable Iraq." December 16, 2005
