Steinmeier on the convening of the Afghan Parliament
On the occasion of the convening of the Afghan Parliament whose two chambers came together on Monday (19 December) for the first time following the first parliamentary and provincial elections in 36 years, Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin: "The German Government congratulates the Afghan people on reaching this important staging post on the road to a democratic Afghanistan. The convening of Parliament is a further commitment by Afghanistan to the irreversibility of the process of democratization. The convening of Parliament marks the successful conclusion of the so-called Bonn Process, largely a German initiative. Yet the major progress achieved cannot hide the fact that Afghanistan is still at the start of its path to becoming a stable, democratic state. The London Conference on Afghanistan planned for late January reaffirms the ongoing international commitment. As part of the international community's efforts, the German Government will continue undiminished its involvement in Afghan reconstruction." December 21, 2005
