The following job is currently open at the German Embassy in Washington, DC.

The German Embassy in Washington is seeking to fill a term-limited position for a locally hired maintenance person, tentatively from February 1, 2024 until March 31, 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:

∙ Support the technical staff seconded to the Embassy

∙ Cleaning and sweeping service for the entire property

∙ Perform seasonal tasks, e.g. winter maintenance (snow removal and sand/salt treatment)  Perform manual jobs included but not limited to carpentry, electrical, painting, mechanical work

∙ Assisting with purchasing, research, organisation and cleaning work

∙ Perform clearing out, cleanup, and organizing jobs

∙ Pickup and dispose of trash and recycling materials

∙ Ensure compliance with all safety and building codes

∙ Collaborate with other maintenance staff and external contractors as needed

Qualifications and Requirements:

Technical

∙ A minimum of two years of hands-on experience in maintenance, preferably within a facili-ties environment or related field

∙ General working knowledge of carpentry, electrical, painting, mechanical work

∙ Experience using hand and electrical tools  Able to inspect and diagnose problems to determine corrective repairs

General:

∙ Solid communication and teamwork skills in an international team environment

∙ Service-oriented and friendly manner ensuring positive interactions with Embassy staff

∙ Organizational skills and reliability

∙ Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and to follow oral and written instructions

∙ High degree of physical resilience (heavy-lifting and carrying) and the ability to perform tasks, which involve prolonged standing, pushing, pulling, climbing, and stooping

∙ Demonstrate flexibility with work hours, showing willingness to undertake overtime and ad-just shifts as needed to maintain facility operations

∙ Ability and willingness to perform other duties as assigned

∙ Valid driver’s license

∙ Basic IT skills

∙ Proficiency in the English language, enabling effective communication in both written and spoken form.

Pay:

Pay is based on a 40-hour week; overtime is compensated at 1.5 times the regular pro-rated hourly rate. The gross starting salary for the position (after the probationary period) is currently $3,515 per month. The position will be open until March 31, 2026, provided the candidate proves suited to the job during the probationary period. A one-year contract will be signed initially.

Contract terms and compensation are based on local law, as per the standard employment agreement for non-diplomatic staff at the German foreign missions in the U.S. and the corresponding pay scale.

Prior to hiring, the successful candidate will be required to show adequate health through a medical examination by the Embassy’s partner physician. In addition, a background check will be conducted. Your cooperation is required for hiring.
