Last year at P.S.18 (The Edward Bush Magnet School for Leadership) in Brooklyn, the first German Enrichment Language Program in a Public Elementary School was launched.
It started with this year’s Kindergarten class (children born in 2012) and is intended to grow until 5th grade. This year the students are in a Spanish Dual Language program and attend German –Language classes three times a week, every week.
As the new school year approaches and the Kindergarten students get ready to become 1st graders, the program is growing with them. Next school year (September 2018) there is an opportunity to have an English-Spanish class and an English-German class. The goal is to have students fully immersed in two languages with a portion of their day in English and a portion of their day in the other language. The goal is to promote bi-literacy.
In order for this to happen, the current Kindergarten class needs 10 more students who want instruction in English and German to join them next year in 1st grade. That is, 10 students who are currently attending kindergarten and going to 1st grade in September 2018.
The school also offers a free after-school program (on campus), technology in all classrooms, a brand new gym (construction begins Spring 2018) and a nurturing learning environment.
P.S.18 is a public school and is located at 101 Maujer Street, Brooklyn, NY. Your child does not need to be fluent in German to register.
