The German Consulate General Recommends:
In 2016, Clara Lu had the opportunity to study in Berlin, Germany through her alma mater, New York University. During her studies, she became interested in the ways Berlin’s residents felt about living in a historically split city and how it affected them in the present, 27 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Through her research, she became curious about whether the current refugee crisis in Germany was impacting the city in a similar way.
Moments of Encounter chronicles the discussions between Berlin residents and Clara Lu on identity, belonging, and a time of social political unrest during the spring and summer of 2016, in the midst of Brexit, the US presidential election, and the Syrian refugee crisis. The installation of acetate weavings is a reinterpretation if those conversations, mimicking the tangential, messy, intended, and sometimes repetitive nature of conversations and recollection.
Clara Lu is an artist born and raised in New York. She studied both in New York and Berlin, and holds a Bachelors in Fine Arts for New York University. She is exploring what it means to be a working artist exploring a multitude of creative pathways across a studio practice, design, and education. Her passions lie in understanding the intersections of visual art, community programming, social practice, and diasporic identity.
