A very moving commemoration of Pogromnacht

Not only the fact that the Pogromnacht marks its 80th anniversary this year, but also the horrible synagogue attack in Pittsburgh last Saturday, hinted that this commemoration on October 29th would be particularly touching.

Seeing the numbers of Holocaust survivors declining, it was an honor to listen to Ruth Zimbler share her experience as a ten-year old watching the destruction of the largest synagogue in Vienna, Austria on November 9, 1938. Zimbler, who will remember forever the crunching sound of broken glass from the synagogue’s windows under her shoes, emphasized that in times like these, when right-wing extremist pressure is more noticeable worldwide, “you have to have the gut to stand up and the gut to support” against all forms of racism, xenophobia, anti-semitism and against those who advocate hatred in our societies.
