The German Consulate General Presents:
The artists Esther Neff (based in NYC) and Anja Ibsch (based in Berlin) will make a collaborative performance at the historical site of German-American exchange, 1014 Fifth Avenue. This townhouse opposite the Metropolitan Museum once belonged to the last US Ambassador to Imperial Germany and will be the future home of the German Academy New York. Have earlier encounters inscribed themselves in this place? Is there a “spirit” in the rooms? The two artists pursue relationships to their respective, located positions in historic, cultural, and personal timespace, elucidating not only personal exchange or contact but also some contexts through which their bodies and socio-political embodiments appear and make appearance(s).
Anja Ibsch has been actively working as an artist and curator in the areas of performance and installation since 1993. Currently based in Berlin, she creates intense works that explore personal, cultural and social aspects of human presence while researching the endurance and tolerance levels of her body. The works engage the performer in a changing perception of her relationship to the world around her. Ibsch creates her work in response to the circumstances that present themselves, adapting to local environments and situations.
Esther Neff is the founder of PPL (Panoply Performance Laboratory), a flexible collective and organizing entity. With/as PPL, Neff has realized operas-of-operations, performance art projects and pieces, thinktanks, books, and installations. Neff's work is social and often unfolds over the course of several years, involving forms of public and collective ideation, travel across small towns in the USA, interviews, and online/interactive processes in conjunction with visceral presence/(as)semblance.
