On his trip to New York City, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas accepted the FASPE Award for Ethical Leadership on behalf of the late Fritz Bauer. The German judge and prosecutor played a significant role in the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in 1960 and the Auschwitz processes from 1963-65. Fritz Bauer is remembered as a “hero [and] a defender of our shared humanity,” said Maas in his laudatory speech. Moreover, Maas emphasized in particular the courage and dedication of Fritz Bauer, who also had to overcome personal punishment as a reaction to his work. In addition to his appearance at FASPE, Heiko Maas spoke to members of the American Council on Germany about the strategic partnership between Germany, Europe and the United States and participated in a panel discussion with students at Columbia University on collective security and multilateralism today.
