The German Consulate General Recommends:
“Weltpokalsiegerbesieger” is not just a really typical long German word but also one of the nicknames of Germany’s soccer club FC St. Pauli. The club, originated in Hamburg, developed itself to a brand, recognizable and beloved all over the world. The German Consulate General is therefore very happy to inform you about their upcoming visit to New York City.
On the 23rd of May the FC St. Pauli will play against Cosmos New York at the B. Comissio Stadium in Upper Manhattan. The game starts at 7:30 PM and tickets cost $25. This game is not just for soccer enthusiasts but everyone who loves a great atmosphere and who wants to get a taste of German soccer.
FC St. Pauli – called “Kiezkicker” because of their stadium located at the center of the party neighbourhood in Hamburg – is one of Germany’s most popular clubs. The Millerntor-Stadium with its 30.000 seats and breathtaking atmosphere became a place of pilgrimage for soccer fans from all over the world. FC St. Pauli’s derby against the local rival Hamburger SV draws national attention and counts among the largest derbies in the country. The club currently plays in the 2nd highest division of German soccer. After a surprise victory over Bayern Munich in 2002, then the world club champion in soccer, St. Pauli named itself the “World champion conqueror” – “Weltpokalsiegerbesieger”…
Cosmos New York, on the other hand, is one of the most recognizable clubs in American soccer history. With former world stars like Pelé, Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbauer New York Cosmos won the US championship five times. Currently they are in fourth place in the North American Soccer League.
