The German Consulate General Recommends:
Visionary director François Girard’s brings a stunning new production of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) to the Metropolitan Opera, transforming the stage into an immense tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting. Wagner’s first major success, this German opera features a fast-moving plot and energetic score—and runs just a little over two hours.
As the brooding title character, bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin stars opposite the gifted German soprano Anja Kampe in her Met debut as the devoted Senta, whose selfless love is what the Dutchman seeks. One of the world’s most celebrated conductors, Valery Gergiev, returns to the Met for the first time since 2015 to lead the thrilling opera.
