Pick-up times for passports
The pick-up times for passports changed to Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Emergency cases
We maintain a centralized U.S.-wide on-call service in cases of urgent emergency outside regular business hours which can be reached via the Embassy in Washington at phone number (+1) 202 298-4000. Please be aware that this on-call service cannot answer general inquiries, such as those relating to passports or visas.
Extreme weather conditions
The Embassy and its consular office follow the decision of the U.S. Federal Government in Washington, DC, on closing or delayed opening in extreme weather conditions. Please check the website of the Office of Personnel Management on the day of your appointment in order to find out if government institutions in D.C. as well as the German Embassy are closed due to an extreme weather Situation.
Additional information

Visitors of the Consular Section may bring one bag into the waiting room with a maximum size of 35 cm (14 inches) x 30 cm (12 inches) x 20 cm (8 inches). Bags larger than this size are not allowed.
Also prohibited in the waiting room are
- electronic devices such as cell phones*, tablet computers, smart watches, laptops, cameras or any other wireless devices
- sealed envelopes or packages
- sharp objects such as scissors, knives or nail files
- weapons or explosive material of any kind are also prohibited.
This list is not exhaustive. Other items may be prohibited at the discretion of the security staff.
*You may store your cell phone (free of charge) in one of the Embassy’s lockers that are located in front of the Consular building.
