The Consular and Legal Department is open to the public Monday through Friday, except on selected German and American holidays.

Please note that you are required to schedule an appointment via our online appointment system for the following consular matters:

- passport and ID card applications

- visa applications 

- notarization of signatures in matters related to your name or personal status 

- notarizations of signatures in other matters

- applications related to your citizenship (apart from retention permits - see below)

For for full notarizations (Beurkundungen) please contact the consular section of the consular department via our contact form.  

Retention Permits: Applications including all supporting documents (two sets of copies) are to be submitted to the Consulate General by mail (not email). Necessary notarization of copies of passports and Greencard may be obtained between 8:00 and 11:00 h am without appointment.

In case of an emergency, such as the loss of your travel document right before a scheduled trip to Germany, walk-ins may be accepted between 8:00 h and 11:00 h am.
