Germany's new “Traffic Light” coalition took power last year, ushering in hopes for new approaches to fight climate change, COVID-19, and more. Tackling many of these challenges will rely on policy built upon science and innovation. On February 24, we are pleased to welcome Uni-Freiburg alumna, Second Mayor of Hamburg, and Senator for Science, Research, and Equality in the Hamburg parliament, Katharina Fegebank. Senator Fegebank led the Green Party in negotiations on the topic of science policy, and will share insights into how an agreement was reached, and what the new administration hopes to achieve. Katharina Fegebank is a Green Party politician and Uni-Freiburg alumna. She currently holds the position of Senator for Science, Research and Equality in the Hamburg parliament, and Second Mayor of Hamburg.

About the Speaker:

Born on February 27, 1977 in Bad Oldesloe, Ms Fegebank spent her youth in Bargteheide, a small town close to Hamburg. In 2004, Ms Fegebank moved to Hamburg where she has lived ever since. Ms Fegebank has earned her Master’s degree (Master of Arts, M.A.) in political science, public law and English studies at the University of Freiburg in 2002. From 2002 until 2003, she was a postgraduate student at the FU Berlin, where she graduated with a “Master of European Studies” (M.E.S).

In the year 2000, Ms Fegebank worked as a Youth Consultant at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Furthermore, she worked as a Project Manager and Research Associate at the Institute for European Politics (IEP) in Berlin from 2003 until 2004.

Between 2004 and 2007 Ms Fegebank was a Research Assistant covering immigration and integration policy for the Group of the Green Alternative List (GAL). Subsequently, she was a Member of the State Executive Committee of Alliance ‘90/The Greens in Hamburg between 2005 and 2008. In the same year, she became State Chairperson of Alliance ‘90/The Greens in Hamburg.

In addition, Ms Fegebank worked as a Research Associate for the Executive Committee of the University of Lüneburg from 2007 until 2013 where she was in charge of strategic university development. Between 2011 and 2015 she was Member of the Hamburg Parliament and Spokesperson for Social, International and European Affairs of the Green Parliamentary Group as well as Chairperson of the Committee for Social, Integration and Labour Affairs of the Hamburg Parliament. Between April 15, 2015 and March 17, 2020 Ms Fegebank was Second Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Head of the Ministry of Science, Research and Equalities. In 2020, she was reelected in her office as Second Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Head of the Ministry of Science, Research, Equalities and Districts.
