Deutsches Haus at NYU will proudly award the tenth annual Volkmar and Margret Sander Prize to Christiane Lemke, Professor Emerita of Political Science and International Relations and the former Director of the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany. Angelika von Wahl will present the laudatory speech in honor of Christiane Lemke. Remarks will also be provided by the Friends of Volkmar and Margret Sander.

A musical performance by the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Uta Habbig will conclude the award ceremony.

About the prize recipient:

Christiane Lemke is Emerita Professor of Political Science and International Relations and former Director of the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence at Leibniz University Hannover/Germany. She received her PhD and her second PhD (Habilitation) at the Freie Universität Berlin. She held several visiting professor positions at universities in the U.S., including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1988-1991), where she still regularly teaches in the Transatlantic Masters’ Program; Harvard University (1991-92; 2001); and NYU, where she was the Max Weber Chair in German and European Politics (2010-2014). She is currently a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Affairs at NYU. Christiane Lemke was also the first woman to be Director of a State Parliament in Lower Saxony.

About the prize:

The Volkmar and Margret Sander Prize was established by Professor Margret Sander in memory of her late husband, Professor Volkmar Sander, former head of the German Department of NYU and founder and first director of Deutsches Haus at NYU. The prize—which was awarded for the first time in 2013 to the late Dr. Fritz Stern, to Dr. Gary Smith the following year, to Dr. Lya Friedrich Pfeifer in 2015, to Dr. Claus Leggewie in 2016, to Karsten Voigt in 2017, to Dr. Henry Jarecki in 2018, to Dr. Susan Nieman in 2019, to Dr. Heinz Ickstadt in 2021, and to Dr. Sabine von Mering in 2022—is awarded annually in the fall and is endowed with a $5,000 grant, kindly donated by Margret Sander. The Prize honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cultural, political, and academic relationship between the German-speaking world and the United States.
