In coordination with the special exhibition, “Klimt Landscapes,” Neue Galerie is delighted to host a lecture series with a focus on different aspects of the Austrian artist's career.
“Gustav Klimt’s Last Rose - Capturing the Fragrance, Art and Science”

The Rose, queen of all flowers, has fascinated humankind for thousands of years and has been depicted by artists through the ages. Even to this day rose fragrance fills the cottage garden surrounding Gustav Klimt’s last studio at Feldmühlgasse in Vienna. However, this fragrant delight does not come from just any rose bush. It is the same plant that has been there for more than a hundred years and was painted by Klimt in his 1912 work “Orchard with Roses.” In June 2020, its fragrance was captured and analyzed using scientific methods to preserve it for future generations. Botanist Julia Asenbaum will give guests a glimpse into scent conservation and Gustav Klimt’s fleeting sensory world.
