Deutsches Haus at NYU presents “'Delfi:' Literature as a Social Event.” At a time when many publications are folding, and the demise of the medium has been widely proclaimed, the new German literary magazine “Delfi” brings an interdisciplinary and internationalist glimmer of hope to the publishing world. This conversation among Fatma Aydemir, Hengameh Yaghoobifarah, and Eileen Myles, will be moderated by Uli Baer and focus on the inaugural issue of “Delfi” and its thematic focus, “temple.” In this conversation, our panelists will examine the important role this exciting literary venture and its trans-national collaborations play in these dark times and jointly think about how art and language can bring us together to question, understand, and make anew the strange world we inhabit.

Readings will include poems by Eileen Myles, Olivia Wenzel's “Das kleine Schwarze, das große Weiße, die Nacht dazwischen,” and Evan Tepest's “The mountains so vast: Eine lesbische Wallfahrt,” in translations by Jon Cho Polizzi.

And you thought literary magazines were dead? Quite the opposite. The portended demise of a medium usually indicates its best days lay ahead. Here and there literary magazines announce their cancellation, as we turn the tables by launching a new one. We present the first edition of “Delfi: Magazine for New Literature” with the firm belief that magazines – with their discursive responsiveness, the heterogeneity of their included genres and forms – stand for the publishing of tomorrow not yesterday. Delfi appears bi-annually with a specific theme, uniting the most relevant, international, German-language positions of prose, drama, poetry, essay, and comics.
