Moderated by Stephen Goss, this discussion with Sven Egenter, Sabine von Mering, Carol Hager, and Councellor Timo Stuehm will explore Germany’s approach to global warming in federal and local contexts as well as look into Germany’s “green” reputation in relation to its current climate behaviors.
The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies, the Department of German, and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a roundtable discussion about “Germany as Climate Leader?” among Sven Egenter (Editor in Chief and Executive Director, Clean Energy Wire, Berlin), Sabine von Mering (Brandeis University), Carol Hager (Bryn Mawr College), and Councellor Timo Stuehm (Permanent Mission of Germany). The roundtable will be moderated by Stephen Gross (NYU CEMS).
In this interdisciplinary conversation, experts from the fields of history, political science, gender and environmental studies, journalism, and the public sector will discuss how Germany is tackling global warming on a federal and local level. The panelists will explore the tension between Germany’s long-standing “green” reputation as a pioneer in environmental protection, local conservation, and renewable energy and the many climate-related problems it faces today, including its heavy reliance on lignite coal and its delayed investment in electrical vehicles (EVs).
This event is part of the Germany on Campus series supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, DC.
