We are pleased to announce the upcoming cooperation with C24 Gallery and the exhibitions, opening on Friday evening, October 7th, at 6:00pm - Expanding Orbits, new works by C24 Gallery artist Marion Fink, and Stageless: Second Act, photographic portraits by Sven Marquardt, courtesy of Galerie Deschler, Berlin. This will be the first solo exhibition for each of these German artists at C24 Gallery.
Expanding Orbits imbues Fink’s signature monoprint portraits with a more focused investigation of the forces that may result in turning points in our lives. Her erstwhile contemplative subjects now find themselves in the midst of changes that impact their bodies and spirits, and are reflected in the objects, landscapes, and spaces around them. Her life-size monotypes provide graphic depictions of how life-altering circumstances can impact us on the most fundamental levels, compelling us to move into unknown territory, while her smaller, intimate drawings provide a distillation of moments in time and space.
In this new collection, the artist explores how individuals might be stuck in a state of inertia, or at the brink of change. Says Fink, “We humans experience this law of inertia in the way our habits and routines keep us on the same tracks… I feel it is deeply human to crave certainty and stability and therefore avoid change and the unknown. At the same time, the desire to expand, to grow and to discover the new and unknown is also something most people experience. When this urge becomes big enough, a person might develop the internal force to make a change from within.”
Stageless: Second Act is a reprisal of Berlin-based photographer Sven Marquardt’s collection of portraits of dancers and performing artists just after they have come off-stage. His intimate snapshots show the unembellished transition from the performers’ dramatic, mask-like stage roles to their strained and tired faces after the show. The result is fluid portraits of performers who are about to discard their practiced repertoire of professional facial expressions in order to return to their civilian selves.
Originally presented at Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin in fall of 2020, before it was shut down due to Covid restrictions, Stageless transformed the largest and most modern show palace in Europe into an exhibition space in order to give its visitors a photographic look behind the scenes. In this new iteration, selections from the original series are presented as an homage to the rigors and passion of transformation through performance, at a time when we are regaining our ability to appreciate and explore our physical relationship to one another.
Join us on Saturday, October 8th at 3:00pm for a live discussion with photographers Sven Marquardt and Laura Heyman, moderated by Sean Fader, Assistant Professor, of Photography & Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Marqardt is currently here in NYC working on a portraiture series of local New Yorkers. Conversely, Heyman, an American, recently completed a project photographing Germans in conjunction with documenta 15 in Kassel, Germany. Juxtaposed against one another, their bodies of work demonstrate two very different approaches to cross-cultural photographic portraiture.
