Peter Freeman, Inc. is pleased to present Made in Cologne, a selection of ceramic sculptures produced in the atelier of Niels Dietrich. This is the first exhibition to highlight the breadth and impact of the atelier, an essential workshop used by some of the most important contemporary artists, many of whom do not usually work within the medium. The gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibition on Wednesday, 22 May, 6–8pm; all are welcome to attend.

The workshop was started in 1984 by Dietrich in response to his artist friend Norbert Prangenberg’s desire to explore the material. Since then the atelier has had a profound influence, elevating ceramic art within the Rhineland and beyond. The workshop is distinguished by its capacity to produce significant works of unique quality and scale, such as Thomas Schütte’s monumental installation for documenta IX in 1992.

In addition to Prangenberg and Schütte, featured artists include other long-time collaborators with the workshop, such as the founding members of the ZERO group Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, as well as Richard Deacon, and Rosemarie Trockel. Exhibited works will include a series of terracotta slabs by Heinz-Günter Prager, figurative works by Paloma Varga Weisz, objects taken from life by Rose Wylie and David Adamo, organic forms by Cameron Jamie and Anna Zimmermann, and new works by Alicja Kwade, Mai-Thu Perret, and Mike Meiré.
