The Festival Neue Literatur presents “Whose/Story Is History: Shifting the Perspective,” exploring how literature challenges conventional narratives and amplifies marginalized voices through readings and discussion.

The Festival Neue Literatur presents “Whose/Story Is History: Shifting the Perspective,” an enlightening event that invites audiences to rethink the narratives that shape our understanding of history. Featuring renowned authors Maaza Mengiste, Doron Rabinovici, Katja Brunner, and Sharon Dodua Otoo, the discussion will explore how literature challenges conventional historical narratives and amplifies marginalized voices.

The event poses critical questions about whose stories are told and how dominant narratives are often constructed at the expense of others. Through readings from their recent works, the authors will highlight the experiences of individuals frequently overlooked in history—such as Ethiopian women who resisted the Italian invasion in 1935 and the struggles of women labeled as witches or hysterics. These narratives reveal the interconnectedness of women’s lives across generations and cultures, emphasizing the importance of reclaiming these stories.

Moderated by award-winning translator Tess Lewis, the conversation will delve into the authors' creative processes while encouraging a deeper examination of literature as a tool for social justice and historical reflection. By shifting focus from traditional power structures, the event aims to inspire attendees to consider how storytelling can break cycles of injustice and foster a more inclusive understanding of our collective past.

“Whose/Story Is History” promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between literature and history, highlighting the vital role of diverse voices in shaping our understanding of the world.
