New ballets to live music
New Chamber Ballet concludes its 20th Anniversary Season with an evening of four ballets by German-born choreographer Miro Magloire, all performed with live music.
Choreographed in Magloire's signature, in-the-round style with the audience seated on all sides of the stage, the four works explore different facets of musical expression.
The world premiere of I Wonder is a collaboration with New Chamber Ballet's Poet-in-Residence, Diane Mehta. Excerpts from her dance-inspired poetry accompany three danced solos. The choreography is inspired by the characteristic mood swings of German Romantic art songs: from flirtatious to euphoric, to sorrowful and self-pitying. The original songs by Schumann, Schubert, Wagner and Brahms, however, have been transformed beyond recognition: they will appear in an arrangement for two maracas.
Another world premiere, In Between, is a new quartet to a score for violin and piano by Hyesun Sun Lee, commissioned as part of the composition prize for dance co-sponsored by the Manhattan School of Music and New Chamber Ballet.
The evening is completed by two excerpts from the 2021 full length ballet Musik: Nocturne, to the first movement of Johannes Brahms' first violin sonata, and a ballet to Beethoven's Violin Sonata No 8. As standalone works, they are lush, dancy quartets.
Performers include the dancers Anabel Alpert, Nicole McGinnis, Rachele Perla, Kayla Schmitt, and Anaka Weiss-Jones; as well as Doori Na (violin) and Melody Fader (piano).
“It's heartening to see work so focused on the meeting of dance and music.” -Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times
