A two-part event with German artist Matthias Garff exploring NYC’s birdlife through sculpture, conversation, and a guided walk.
Matthias Garff, currently in residence at ISCP and based in Leipzig, invites you to two public events that explore urban birdlife through art and observation.
On June 10, Garff will present his artistic practice at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in Brooklyn. He will be joined by Hannah Kirshenbaum, founder of NYC Queer Birders, for a conversation about birds that live with us in the city—often unnoticed, yet closely connected to our shared environment. Together, they will reflect on urban biodiversity and the birding community.
On June 12, Garff and Kirshenbaum lead a Bird Walk at West 87th Street Park & Garden in Manhattan. Visitors are invited to explore the garden, where Garff’s bird sculptures are temporarily installed in dialogue with the site. The sculptures—made from found materials during his five-month stay in New York—depict bird species commonly seen across the city. Participants will encounter both the artworks and real birds along the way. Spot all the hidden sculptures to receive a small reward!
The Bird Walk is presented in collaboration with NYC Queer Birders and the Goethe-Institut New York, with support from ISCP and Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen.
No registration required. Binoculars and cameras welcome. In case of rain, the June 12 event will be canceled.
