A rare screening of Mahler (1974), Ken Russell’s audacious and visually stunning portrait of composer Gustav Mahler, where the story of his life, loves, and inner turmoil unfolds through a dreamlike series of flashbacks

This rare screening of Mahler (1974) presents Ken Russell’s audacious and visually stunning portrait of composer Gustav Mahler, widely regarded as one of Russell’s most stirringly imaginative films. Set during the composer’s final days in 1911, the film follows Mahler (Robert Powell) and his wife Alma (Georgina Hale) on a train journey, during which the story of his life, loves, and inner turmoil unfolds through a dreamlike series of flashbacks. Russell’s signature style, blending emotional intensity with surrealist imagery, brings Mahler’s complex world to life: his struggles with antisemitism, his painful family history, his passionate yet strained relationship with Alma, and the shadow of his declining health. Featuring powerful performances and a rich musical backdrop, Mahler offers a deeply human and visually bold tribute to one of music’s great visionaries. Presented by the Richard Wagner Society of New York, this screening is a special opportunity to experience the film on the big screen with fellow Wagner and Mahler enthusiasts.
