Hidden Art of the Holocaust: Curt Bloch’s Onderwater-Cabaret - January 22
Hidden Art of the Holocaust: Curt Bloch’s Onderwater-Cabaret © Congregation Rodeph Sholom
An immersive art installation inspired by Curt Bloch’s secret wartime magazine, exploring art as resistance during the Holocaust, with presentations and Q&A featuring Bloch’s family and collaborators
During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Curt Bloch lived in hiding to escape deportation. In secret, he created Onderwater-Cabaret, a handmade magazine of satirical poems that became his personal act of resistance against Nazi oppression. From 1943 to 1945, Bloch produced nearly one hundred issues, using humor, language, and creativity to confront fascist propaganda and affirm the resilience of the human spirit.
After Bloch’s death in 1975, these extraordinary works remained largely unnoticed until his granddaughter rediscovered them decades later. Her research helped trace their history and artistic influences, sparking renewed interest in Bloch’s life and legacy. Around the same time, Bloch’s daughter connected with German designer and author Thilo von Debschitz, who collaborated with an international team to create a digital archive that made the magazines widely accessible. This work also helped reconnect the family with the Jewish Museum Berlin, which now houses the original journals and recently opened an exhibition dedicated to Bloch’s work.
In the days surrounding International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Congregation Rodeph Sholom invites the community to experience an immersive, all-day walk-through art installation inspired by Onderwater-Cabaret. The exhibition will be open throughout the day for self-guided exploration. At 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM, visitors may also attend a presentation and Q&A with Simone Bloch, Curt Bloch’s daughter, joined by Thilo von Debschitz. Together, we will reflect on the enduring power of art as resistance and the vital importance of memory.
