The US tour of Leonora in the Morning Light stops for NY premieres on Sept 17 (Jacob Burns) & Sept 20 (Roxy Cinema)! Join live director Q&As with Thor Klein & Lena Vurma, plus special guest Amy Ernst, celebrating surrealist artist Leonora Carrington.
The New York premieres of the majority German international co-production Leonora in the Morning Light are taking place on Thursday, September 17th at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville (7:00 PM) and Sunday, September 20th at Roxy Cinema New York City (3:00 PM).
Meet the filmmakers! Co-directors Thor Klein (Germany) and Lena Vurma (Switzerland) will hold a live Q&A discussion after both screenings. Plus, special guest Amy Ernst, granddaughter of Max Ernst, will attend the New York City screening.
About the film: In the late 1930s, painter Leonora Carrington—a rebel against societal expectations—joins the surrealist movement alongside iconic figures like André Breton and Salvador Dalí in Paris. A whirlwind love affair with German artist Max Ernst confronts her with her inner demons. Fleeing to Mexico during the war, Leonora ultimately claims her own artistic power.
Produced by German production outfit Dragonfly Films in co-production with Mexico, the UK, and Romania, the film celebrates an extraordinary legacy. Today, Leonora Carrington is one of the highest-selling female painters worldwide, alongside Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe.
Following New York, the tour continues to Sedona, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Taos. Follow @Leonoramovie on Instagram for details and future dates!
