Four ballets by Miro Magloire, performed in-the-round by five dancers, to live music for violin and piano.
New Chamber Ballet opens its 2026-2027 season with PEARLS, an evening of four ballets by German-born choreographer Miro Magloire, all performed to live chamber music.
Choreographed in Magloire's signature, in-the-round style with the audience seated on all sides of the stage, the four works explore different facets of musical expression.
Anchoring the evening will be an excerpt of Well, one of Magloire’s major recent works. The title refers to a source, and to the people who come to nourish themselves: dance and music springing forth to feed their sense of humanity. Anthony Cheung's violin-and-piano works add a perpetually renewing rhythmic imagination, and scintillating harmonies that evoke the reflection of light in water. “Well... had a dreaming, contemplative feel... meditative ... as if everything would happen whether we were there or not,” wrote Leigh Witchel in a review of the ballet's 2023 premiere.
Another highlight will be Undercurrent to music by Didi Gu, featuring four dancers in “herbaceous green tunics... The choreography staged them mostly in pairs that occasionally traded partners before finally coming together, like the nyctinasty of a beautiful flower closing its petals,” (Brad S. Ross, NY Theatre Wire).
Celebrating her final performance with New Chamber Ballet, dancer Rachele Perla will perform a new solo, set to a dazzling piano score by Cuban-born composer Ahmed Alom. The music creatively combines Cuban-style overlapping, or 'displaced', rhythms.
The duet Upon My Wings, is set to German-born composer Reiko Fueting's tanz.tanz for violin. Premiered in 2016, the dance will be performed in a new, in-the-round version.
Performers include the dancers Edie Clarke, Arianna Hughlett, Margaret Kingsbury, Amber Neff, Rachele Perla, Kayla Schmitt; as well as Madeline Hocking (violin) and Tina Deng (piano).
