Deutsches Haus at NYU presents a reading by the author and current Deutscher Literaturfonds writer-in-residence at Deutsches Haus at NYU, Juan Guse, from his recent book A Thousand Times As Much Money As Now (Tausend Mal so viel Geld with jetzt, S. Fischer Verlage, 2025), followed by a conversation with the acclaimed writer and translator Dorothee Elmiger about wealth, tears, and utopias.
About “A Thousand Times As Much Money As Now:”
One studied geography and works as a cemetery gardener in Dortmund for minimum wage, in spite of holding digital assets worth 20 million Euros. The other still drives his dented Saab station wagon around town, even though he expects to be in the nine-digit range soon. For one year, Juan S. Guse spent time with ordinary men who made their fortunes through cryptocurrencies. These arent developers, hedgefund managers, or crypto-influencers—but just guys who happened to be in the right place at the right time. “A Thousand Times as Much Money as Now” is about them and what such a dramatic jump in social status and class has done to them. What drew them to the promises of this technology? Why is it always men? How does the desire for quick money fit into a society in crisis mode? Why are some of them driven to suicide? And how does the narrator Guse plan to recoup the 2,000 Euros he himself lost on crypto?
